Upholstery Batting
Are you under the impression that all upholstery batting is the same? If so, you may want to read this article prior to buying any piece of furniture, or creating your own refurbished piece.
The thing that most salespeople won’t tell you is that not all furniture is created the same. While you can easily find inexpensive pieces that seem to be rather comfortable, these pieces will only last you one to two years. In the end, you will wind up buying new furniture numerous times over the next ten years…rather than simply purchasing one. However, this is not to say that expensive furniture is where it’s at either – in fact, you cannot purchase quality furniture based upon price alone. Instead, learn a thing or two about upholstery batting, and you will be much better off.
Many large manufacturers will stuff their furniture with batting that was not meant to be sat upon. What does this do? Eventually, those cushions will lose their form completely. Also, you may find that the arms and backs of your furniture start to crease and wilt with time, which happens to be a direct result of poor “insulation” (so to speak). Now, you can ask the salesperson about the material that is inside of the piece you are considering, though you might be met with a blank state, or you can do a bit of research on your own (always the better option).
Call the manufacturer of the piece that you are thinking about, ask them what kind of batting has been used inside of the piece, and then find out whether or not this is the right type for the piece that you are considering. Most of the time, soft cotton fillings are not meant to be sat upon, while harder fillings are not meant for the sides and backs of furniture. Once you learn about the upholstery batting inside of that piece, you can then decide if the price tag is worth it.
Remember not to buy anything based upon price alone – sometimes, an expensive piece is nothing more than overpriced. Rely upon your own knowledge, and you will be far better off in the long run.
Understanding upholstery batting is not confusing, just make sure to gather all the information that you can. If you want to buy one piece of furniture that will last for many years, buy the right one the first time around.
