Kill Mildew on Upholstery

Do you want to know how to kill mildew on upholstery? Sometimes, you have a piece of furniture that you just don’t want to let go of, but you must get rid of that grime before using it.

If you have purchased some type of antique piece that is less than clean, leave it outside of your home until you can thoroughly clean it off. You never know what kind of mould you are dealing with, and it’s far better to be safe than sorry in this case. Prior to getting rid of that dirt, make sure that you are wearing some type of protective mouth and nose mask. Once you are ready to get to work on that piece, you can begin to follow the directions listed below that will help you kill mildew on upholstery.

The first thing that you have to do is to remove any large chunks of mould from the piece. You can use a small stiff brush to do this, or you can use your household broom – if you use your broom to clean the piece, be sure to clean the broom afterwards. Then, using a vacuum cleaner, vacuum the surface of the piece until it appears rather clean. Following this vacuuming procedure, empty your vacuum bag or canister to avoid getting any unwanted spores inside of your home. Next, be sure that the piece is not wet in any manner (use a fan or other dryer to get rid of any moisture).

After brush and vacuuming, if you still find that the piece is covered with rot, use a sponge laden with soapy water to wash the piece thoroughly. Try not to get the piece too wet, though it is necessary to wash it completely. One great way to kill mildew on upholstery is to purchase an upholstery shampoo, or make your own solution using warm water and dish soap. If you find that the material does not come clean after all of these processes, there is only one more thing that you can do.

Although you probably don’t want to spend the money to hire a professional upholstery cleaner, if you really love that piece this may be necessary. Then again, these professionals cannot guarantee that your piece will be spotless. In fact, you may have to have the piece recovered if you cannot get it clean.

Whatever you do, never bring a piece of furniture that is covered with mould into your home. Always kill mildew on upholstery outside of your house.
