Boat Upholstery
Do you think that all materials are roughly the same? When it comes to boat upholstery, this is simply not the case.
Since you will be outside when you use your boat, there are some things to think about that do not necessarily pertain to other types of material. Most importantly, you will want to choose a material that is relatively water resistant. While it may be difficult to find a fabric that is completely resistant to water, those that have the ability to repel most water will serve you well. Also, unlike other things that require material, boat upholstery must be comfortable no matter what the weather may be.
Numerous boats are outfitted with some type of leather or vinyl material. While this can be luxurious, lounging upon hot leather while the sun beats down is not incredibly comfortable. Instead, look for leather surfaces that have been made especially for boats or find vinyl surfaces that are not quite as heat absorbent. When it comes to cloth, make sure that yours is stain proof, or you could be scrubbing at that material day in and day out. Also, you should know that cloth tends to rip and stain over time (just think about all that sunblock, scuba gear, and drinks). Design wise, the type of material that you choose is up to you.
If you are reupholstering an older boat, you may want to find vintage boat upholstery that will go with the shell of the vessel itself. Or, you can choose some modern materials that have been specially formulated to combat sun, sea, and sand. One of the best ways to look at newer materials is to visit a boat shop in order to tour those models that are recent. This way, you can touch and feel the material that you might be considering. After you have figured out what kind of material you like, you can then purchase it for a reduced rate online.
As you can see, this type of material is drastically different from those that cover car seats, motorcycle seats, or furniture. This is one type of vehicle that you really do not want to cover with the wrong material. If you are not sure about specific fabrics, it is best to consult an expert.
Choosing your boat upholstery can be a lot of fun once you get past those restrictions. Keep in mind the things mentioned above, and you will find that your boat stays intact for many years to come.
